SNA Minutes from 11/17/2008 10:00 A.M. – Begin Meeting 1. Food Drive Information a. Jennifer Tuffree gave an update on the SNA food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank of Southwestern Wisconsin. i. Flyers have been made and posted. Bins will be located in Wingra Café, Phil’s and Mazzuchelli. ii. Emails have been sent to each core class asking for volunteers, baked goods donations and announcing the friendly competition between core groups for a reward of a treat during lecture the Monday before Thanksgiving iii. Food Drive will run from 11am-1pm Wednesday 11/19-Friday 11/21 and all donations will be taken to Second Harvest at 1:30pm on Friday by Shannon Hattenhauer and Jennifer Tuffree iv. Pick N Save on McKee Road donated a $25 gift card to the cause. Copp’s donated at $10 gift card to the cause. 2. December Volunteer Activity a. Justin mentioned holding a Wii, Xbox, Guitar Hero competition or event to try to raise money for the charity called Child’sPlay. Justin offered to take charge of this activity. b. ADDENDUM – After the meeting, Justin made arrangements for this to take place, details are as follows: i. The games will take place on Thursday, December 11 from 4pm-10pm. ii. The RockBand/Guitar Hero games will take place in the Anderson Auditorium iii. The Wii games will take place in Wingra iv. SNA may look into purchasing snacks/sports drinks or we may get student government involved v. SNA may also choose to match donations made toward this activity 3. Track Jackets/Fleeces (which are replacing sweatshirts this year) a. There has been a great interest in repurchasing these items (especially by the current 460 class) b. Sara is going to look into the prices and try to insert new prices into the old order forms. c. It was decided that it might be a good idea to have the current 460 class order before the end of the semester (given a 1 week time frame) and then the other classes will be able to purchase these items at the beginning of next semester. 4. SNA Garage Sale (Will take place at the last SNA meeting of the semester – 12/8) a. A nursing school-wide email will be sent out prior to this date advertising items for sale b. Prices were agreed upon by people selling their items. They are as follows: i. White Scrub Tops/Bottoms - $5 each item v. Red Shirts - $5 ii. iClickers - $20 vi. Extra sweatshirts - $35 iii. Lab Coats - $5 vii. Extra track jackets - $35 iv. Clipboards - $5 5. Sara reported that the profits from the Kapplan practice test totaled $45. All of the money was donated to SNA. 6. The Holiday Party for SNA members will take place on December 7, 2008 at 6:00p.m. a. Three options for location will be: i. Great Dane – Hilldale ii. The Old Fashioned iii. Frida’s b. A $400 cap will be placed on the party spending c. SNA will send out an email, please RSVP by 12/1. 7. The next SNA meeting will take place on December 8, 2008 from 10:00am-11:00am, Allison will send an email regarding the location. 10:48 – Meeting adjourned.
SNA Minutes from 10/20/2008 10:00 A.M. – Begin Meeting 1. Wendy Countryman, an insurance nurse who works for WEA trust (an insurance company predominantly used by teachers and school employees) came to discuss this area of nursing. a. Her main focus is Diabetes Education i. She serves as a telephone resource – someone who is familiar with health information that patients can talk to after receiving a diagnosis of diabetes b. Other programs offered through WEA Trust nurses are: obesity management, asthma management, kids in control (a children’s diabetes program), cancer resources and utilization management (authorizing days for antibiotics and post-surgical hospital stays) c. WEA Trust nurses also play a role in the development and implementation of software programs d. Occupational health is another avenue of WEA Trust nursing and includes: providing staff info about blood borne pathogens, providing flu shots, administering and reading TB tests and other health in-services e. She reminded us that it is advantageous for insurance companies to have nurses to try to keep people healthy, feeling good and out of the hospitals. 2. The Heart Walk took place on October 18, 2008. Our team, the Heartthrobs, with Jackie as captain raised over $700! a. We raised $50 at the bake sale, so SNA matched with a $50 contribution 3. The T-shirt ideas and voting will continue to take place via email. a. Prices so far are ~$10 for T-shirts and $16 for sweatshirts for SNA members b. There will be a slight increase for non-members i. The profits from the T-shirts will go toward the Mary Elizabeth’s Peru proposal ii. The profits from the sweatshirts, fleeces and track jackets will be placed in the SNA fund c. Erika will take a copy of the order form when it is created in order to take charge of staff orders since there is a big interest from nursing staff to get clothing items d. Nursing Decals that we currently have will be distributed with shirts since we are unsure if all of them stick properly e. Noted that there is an increased interest in retractable nametag holders. Kathryn will look into it and incorporate into T-shirt sales perhaps.
4. November community service idea was discussed and all agreed on having a food drive on campus and possibly donating the items to Second Harvest. a. A committee will be formed of those interested in taking on the food drive and will be led by Jennifer Tuffree. b. One idea included having a bake sale and exchanging an item for the food drive for a baked good. 5. The December project was discussed and Adopt-A-Family was a popular idea among members…more to come… 6. Next meeting was scheduled. It will be held November 17, 2008 at 10:00a.m. in Predolin 307. (Possible Speaker: Navy Nurse) 7. Traci collected dues and handed out membership cards for those who paid. a. Dues are $10 for the year, $5 for the semester. 11:00 – Meeting ended Reminders: On November 10, 2008 the group of students that went to Guatemala will be giving a presentation in the Washburn room at noon. On November 11, 2008 there will be a Kapplan practice exam which will be held at 6:00 p.m. (room TBA) which will cost $1-$2, all of which the profits will go to SNA.
Minutes For September 29, 2008 10:00 A.M. – Begin Meeting 1. Mary Elizabeth Bathum gave powerpoint presentation on the Aymara women of Peru and her proposal to raise money to open a health center. a. Center would be located in the city of Juli near Lake Titicaca b. 1/3 hectare of land already purchased c. Electricity, sewage already in place d. Aymara women would perform labor including making adobe bricks for walls e. Architect has donated time f. The Aymara Women’s Integral Health and Artesian Center would be used i. By over 100 women ii. As a place to practice integral medicine iii. As a meeting place iv. As an overnight hospitality area v. For storage of wool and equipment g. Currently need $3,000.000 that would: i. Purchase windows, steel rods and doors that lock for the two story construction h. Mary Elizabeth asked for help from SNA in any way possible. i. SNA ideas for helping build the Aymara Women’s Integral Health and Artesian Center are: i. Help market the homemade wool articles (animalitas or sweaters) ii. Have Mary Elizabeth contact local stores to sell the raw wool iii. Increase T-shirt prices $5-6 and donate the extra to this project iv. Have a silent auction this semester and donate the proceeds 2. Jackie Zdroik got a “prequote” for T-shirts at around $9.00 per shirt (solid color, solid print) a. It was a consensus to get long-sleeved shirts and there is a large interest in hoodie sweatshirts for an extra cost b. Kathryn will send out designs/colors for an online vote via email c. Jackie will check into pricing for both items 3. Heart Walk will take place on October 18, 2008. Our team is the Heartthrobs. Jackie is listed as captain. See AHA website for more details. a. Jackie will email this info to Dawn who will post it on the SNA website b. People who will be doing the Heart Walk will fundraise, SNA will match their donation c. Fundraising idea for Heart Walk was a Bake Sale i. Bake Sale will take place on Monday, October 6, 2008 around 10a.m. (Allison will determine where and if possible and email) ii. We need donated baked goods iii. We need people to work the bake sale if possible 4. Survey results were discussed a. Noted that volunteering at Children’s Hospital and Hospice may be difficult d/t long orientation process b. Noted that there is an increased interest in retractable nametag holders. Kathryn will look into it and incorporate into T-shirt sales perhaps. 5. Erika spoke to us about checking for the binder from last year, money issues and stated that she would be able to make most of the future meetings. 6. Dawn spoke about availability of guest speakers in the nursing insurance area to come talk to SNA a. Topics of interest to SNA are: Med-Surg, Post-op Rehab and Geriatrics b. Planning on Insurance Nurse to come at next meeting 7. Dawn spoke about possible volunteer opportunity at Damascus Road Church for “Health Day”. Date and time in October TBA. 8. White Scrubs/Iclickers/Labcoats will continue to be for sale through students. At the end of the semester SNA will try to have a day where new students can be contacted about purchasing these items when they need them, or SNA may be interested in purchasing them or receiving donations. 9. It was agreed that we will skip the pumpkin painting idea for this month d/t other projects. Perhaps postpone it for some sort of activity around Thanksgiving. 10. Next meeting was scheduled. Minutes from September 8 10:30 A.M. – Begin Meeting - Welcome, officer introductions, doughnuts and orange juice provided - SNA meeting attendants introduced themselves - SNA meeting times discussed o People agreed that 10:30a.m. on Mondays is a good time to hold meetings. o No representatives from 4th semester students so officers will contact Nancy Comello to make sure there are no class conflicts. o Next meeting scheduled: Monday, September 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. (Lower Level Library Conference Room was reserved) - Welcome event ideas were discussed o A lunch picnic (pot-luck style) was agreed upon o The lunch will take place Monday, September 15, 2008 at 11:30a.m. (Lake Room was reserved after the meeting, so it will take place there.) o People signed up to bring food - Fundraising/Volunteer/Guest Speaker ideas were discussed and questionnaire was filled out. Results to come soon! o Senior students brought up an idea about utilizing the Kaplan representative’s idea and offering the practice NCLEX exam as a fundraiser for students who are not in SNA or go to other schools. Contact her by late September/early October if we are interested. - Senior students brought up interest in selling back their iClickers, white scrubs, clipboards,etc. o It was agreed that people who wish to sell items will bring them to the lunch on 9/15 and sell them to interested students. o Price agreed upon for iClickers is $25 - Erika Helmer (our SNA advisor) stopped by to introduce herself and address concerns - Representatives from the nursing classes who were present volunteered to serve as contact people to distribute information. They are as follows: o 5th Semester: Alison Ertl o 4th Semester: no representative o 3rd Semester: Kathryn Brink o 2nd Semester: Nina Brown o 1st Semester: Joanne Weber - The Madison area SNA conference was discussed and Edgewood’s SNA will be recruiting a team of students willing to come early, set up tables, set out food and signs showing directions for the conference in February. o Senior students reminded all students that there is a 4th semester conference requirement and that this conference will fulfill that. - ID cards will be distributed at the next meeting. Fees are as follows: o $10 for one year membership, $5 for semester membership (please see an officer if you would like to be in SNA, but are unable to financially make the commitment.) 11:10 – Adjourn meeting
